Daylight, slowly

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND

You open the notebook before the early light reaches the desk. Yesterday’s notes crowd the margins, arrows pointing toward more arrows, making the task look larger than it is. The coffee machine hums briefly. A neighbor opens a window. You write the date on a fresh page and put aside the long list you had been about to make.

A chord spreads through the room like a thin piece of cloth. The percussion passes softly, leaving almost no hard edges. The melody does not hurry to complete itself; now and then it offers a short phrase. You sort the papers into related piles and move the unrelated ones to the other side. The music does not do the work for you, but it gives the ordinary morning an unhurried pace in which to begin.

Sunlight finally reaches the corner of the desk and brightens the rim of the cup. Perhaps the difficult part was not the absence of an answer. Perhaps you were trying to fit too much into one place. You cross out an unnecessary heading, separate a paragraph, and give one small task a line of its own. As the pen touches the page, a bird outside calls twice.

The loop ends and the coffee has become warm instead of hot. The page is not suddenly perfect, but it is a little clearer than when you began. You stop counting everything a morning ought to contain and put a quiet mark beside the small part you have finished. The daylight keeps moving. The rest of the day can continue from here.
