SOUNDSCAPE 11 / NIGHT CITY PULSE
The lantern crossing
One returned sketchbook, one unexpected turn.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
At quarter past one, Lin left the printing workshop with a small patch of blue ink drying on his shoe. He caught the last tram toward the old district and put his camera away. On the opposite seat lay a grey sketchbook. Its first page showed a hand-drawn street map, with a tiny lantern where two tram tracks crossed. There was no name, so he carried it off the tram.
The drawing disagreed with his phone by two streets. He followed the wet rails past a convenience store and a slow cleaning truck, expecting the lantern to mark a bar. Instead, he found a watch repair shop being packed into boxes. The owner recognised the sketchbook. A young artist drew the corner every evening, he said, but tonight she was moving to another city.
A postcard tucked into the final page was addressed to the shop. Lin handed it over. The artist had wanted to give the owner a finished street drawing, but could never get the light right. Smiling, the man lifted a repaired desk lamp from a cupboard. That was the light she saw while waiting for her bus. He asked Lin to photograph it and send the picture to the email on her card.
In the photograph, the lamp reached all the way to the rain-dark rails. Lin sent it, left the book safely inside the shop, and walked home twenty minutes later than usual. The crisp pulse of this soundscape follows his unhurried steps, while the returning melody circles that small window: a corner of an enormous city, briefly connected by a drawing, a lamp, and somebody willing to take the longer route.
