SOUNDSCAPE 32 / NIGHTTIME CHILL
The last spin
There is still time for the small things.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
The laundromat lists its final admission time on the wall. You have arrived three minutes before it. No other customers are inside, although several drums are turning slowly behind glass across the room. After loading a machine, you sit on a plastic chair near the door and discover last week’s unfinished shopping list in your coat pocket.
The percussion resembles the occasional light sound inside a turning drum. Above it, the melody circles a small figure and gradually finds different directions. You unfold the list and add ticks beside the things already bought. A scarf rests neatly folded on a machine by the window, apparently waiting for someone. Beside it, an empty paper cup holds down a narrow handwritten note.
The note contains a telephone number and a thank-you. After hesitating, you call the duty number on the shop door instead. The person answering explains that a regular customer has already asked about the scarf. Would you put it in the cloth bag beneath the counter? You do, then turn the cup upside down so a draft through the doorway cannot carry the note away.
Your machine signals the end of its cycle just as the owner returns to collect a few things. They lift the cloth bag as though a small matter has finally settled into its proper place. You pack the warm clothes and step outside. Nothing remarkable has happened during the last wash of the night, but you remember the careful edges of the scarf, and that even this late, someone is still looking after what another person left behind.
