SOUNDSCAPE 27 / BEACON CHILL
When the beam comes around
A promise measured in returning light.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
Your younger sister wants to see the lighthouse again, so you walk to the shore after dinner. Years ago, on her first visit, someone called her away to catch a boat before the lamp came on. You remember casually promising to stay until the light appeared next time. Many other plans pushed that promise aside, but it never quite left her memory.
The sea wind has cooled the railing. Bass and gentle percussion move repeatedly through the sound. At first the tower is only a quiet outline. When the first beam comes around, both of you stop speaking at once. Brightness travels over water and distant roofs, briefly touches the ground near your feet, and continues toward somewhere farther away.
Your sister begins counting how long it takes to return, but keeps interrupting herself with older stories. You talk about paper boats you once made together and a hat that fell into the water while everyone hurried toward the ferry. The details refuse to match. After a short argument, you decide each of you can keep a separate version. When the beam returns, you are both laughing.
Before leaving, she says that two turns were enough; there is no need to wait for every one. A delayed promise does not require a grand scene to complete it, you realize. It can be an ordinary evening when two people are willing to stand still a little longer. You walk back along the shore, leaving the returning light to continue its patient route over the water behind you.
