SOUNDSCAPE 28 / CLOUD DRIFT
The clouds brought no address
The picture changes before the shutter does.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
You checked the direction of sunrise and calculated the walk from the parking area to the hillside. Once the camera is ready, clouds keep arriving from the wrong side, covering the space you had reserved for distant peaks. After twenty minutes, the lines still refuse to match your imagined picture. Wind lifts a corner of the composition sketch in the bag, as if reminding you of the plan.
The melody has no hard boundary. Sustained tones move aside to make room for another layer. You begin to notice changes within the clouds themselves. The mass that hid one summit has become a narrow gray edge. Elsewhere, a gap brighter than the mountain opens in the sky. For the first time, you turn the lens without comparing its position to the lines on the paper.
Eventually you put the tripod away, turn the sketch over, and draw several distances between clouds. Halfway through, the sky changes again. Rather than erase the earlier marks, you add new ones beside them. Several slightly displaced skies begin to share the page, like letters without addresses that have all been delivered to you at once.
Before descending, you do press the shutter. It is not the photograph you originally meant to bring home, nor does it exactly reproduce any of the little drawings. Still, you know why you want to keep it. The clouds did not arrive as arranged, but they moved your attention elsewhere. Sometimes what you have waited for takes another shape, and you are allowed to learn a different way of receiving it.
