SOUNDSCAPE 37 / PROJECTOR LO-FI
Behind the screen

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
Once the audience leaves, rows of chairs show their ordinary shapes again. You help gather paper cups from the community screening, then return upstairs for a scarf left in the projection room. The machine has not entirely cooled, and the air holds a warm, dusty smell. Through the narrow window, the screen below has turned white. Nobody is waiting for another image.
The lo-fi phrase has gently softened edges. Its beat resembles a machine gradually settling after work. While looking for the scarf, you notice several boxes bearing film titles arranged in the wrong order. The projectionist is on a stepladder tidying cables and asks whether you could return the boxes to the sequence written on the wall.
One crooked label reveals older writing beneath it. The room had hosted weekend screenings years before, you learn; even the polished scissors on the desk came from that earlier time. Together you rewrite the new labels clearly and enter tonight’s actual program into the log. A small blot of ink appears after the date, and neither of you rushes to remove it.
Before the lights go off, you find the scarf on a hook behind the door. Downstairs, a little clip still clings to the edge of the screen. You hand it back and wait while the projectionist locks up. The film has ended, but quiet actions are still catching its last light. What you carry away from the evening is, unexpectedly, a set of images that never appeared on the screen at all.
