SOUNDSCAPE 40 / HILLSIDE CHILL

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
At the front of the queue, you discover that you have folded the ticket into a tiny square. The attendant opens it to check the date and smiles, suggesting that you keep it even after reaching the upper station. Once the cabin doors close, the platform withdraws slowly beneath your feet. A hillside you have always viewed from the road begins unfolding in a completely different direction.
The bright melody follows the bass forward. Its unhurried beat gives each part of the movement a clear edge. Opposite you, an older passenger holds a pencil and a small notebook, looking out before adding a mark. You assume they are drawing the mountains. A closer look reveals only a few simple lines indicating the positions of roofs below.
They turn the notebook toward you and point out a house they once lived in. Trees conceal it from the road; only at this height does one complete corner of the roof appear. They have not returned for a long time and do not intend to visit today. They simply want to see whether the tree that once shaded the window has grown any taller.
At the upper station, you fold your ticket again and draw three lines on its back from memory: the platform, the hillside, and the roof that appeared between the leaves. The drawing is inaccurate, but it gives the ascent a shape you can take away. Outside the cabin, the air is cooler than below. You have not decided which path to follow next, yet the journey already feels worthwhile.
