SOUNDSCAPE 20 / FERRY SOFT PULSE
The blue ferry ticket
Crossing the water, carrying something forward.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
As the ferry left the dock, Shen balanced a folding chair across his knees and reread an order placed three weeks earlier. A community hall wanted it for a Saturday reading group, but its organiser had changed and the deposit had never arrived. Having finished the chair, he decided to cross the bay and ask directly. His blue ticket trembled against the window in the breeze.
Boxes filled the hall entrance. The new organiser was posting a roof repair notice and explained that the reading group had moved to a corner bakery. After a long search, she found the order and acknowledged the missed handover, although she could not yet confirm payment. Shen was about to take the chair away when someone asked whether books were still available to borrow.
He helped move the boxes into a dry corridor, then followed them to the bakery. The books carried handwritten recommendations from different residents. Only two tables made up the temporary meeting space. A child stood reading because the available chairs were too high. Shen opened his folding chair, checked its locks, and set it nearby. He and the organiser wrote a clear short-term loan agreement while the committee considered the purchase.
On the return ferry, his knees were empty and his phone held a photograph of the chair beside a bookshelf. The sale remained unfinished, so he marked a follow-up date instead of treating the loan as an unlimited promise. A soft pulse travels steadily forward, and a bright phrase rises after each long note: a practical place for the next gathering, carried across the water and carefully unfolded.
