SOUNDSCAPE 19 / WINTER LO-FI
Radio at the snowline
A repaired radio brings the next cabin closer.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
Snow reached the cabin windowsill before Ji managed to replace the back of the old radio. His new winter caretaker checklist included pipes, firewood, and a shortwave call at seven each evening. The previous keeper said a farm across the valley sometimes used the channel to confirm road conditions. Ji had considered it an outdated habit until his first evening produced nothing but static.
A drawer held batteries, spare screws, and half a repair manual. He cleaned the oxidised contacts with an eraser, looking toward the door whenever the stove wood cracked. At twelve past seven, a few broken words emerged. Nobody was in trouble. The farmer wanted to know whether thin ice had formed along the lakeside, so tomorrow’s feed delivery could use the appropriate road.
Ji checked from the designated observation point without stepping onto the ice. A narrow white edge followed the shore, while dark wet stones remained visible on the northern incline. He reported exactly what he saw and admitted which sections he did not know. The farmer thanked him, then asked whether the stove door still refused to close. Lifting its left hinge slightly solved that problem too.
Next morning, a bag of fresh bread hung from the office handle with a sketch of the winter routes inside. Ji pinned it beside the checklist and clearly marked the radio dial. Snow continued falling, but seven o’clock had become more than a line of instructions. Soft, grainy beats and brief melodic answers trace the modest satisfaction of making a clear reply, and receiving one from beyond the trees.
