SOUNDSCAPE 18 / HILLSIDE AMBIENT
The hilltop envelope
A map can remember a place differently.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
When Xia returned to the hillside farm, the tree mentioned in her father’s letter had fallen in a storm. She had promised to open the envelope beneath it and send him a photograph. Now only pale woodchips marked the place. Her father had retired south, and his unopened letter had waited on her desk for six months while she kept postponing the journey.
A farm worker recognised her and explained the paths rebuilt after the storm. Xia made maps professionally, yet she kept comparing the new slopes to childhood memories. After three unsuccessful passes through the planting rows, she could not locate a buried tin she remembered. Her father messaged to ask whether it was windy beneath the tree. She started describing the damage, then stopped.
At last, she opened the envelope. There was no solemn farewell inside, only a sketch map pointing seven rows below the tree to seeds her mother had collected. The proportions were wildly inaccurate, and a tailless dog marked one turn. Following the worker’s directions alongside the drawing, Xia found the rusty tin. Every paper packet still carried a year and a colour, though the seeds might no longer grow.
She took the tin to the office and asked which seeds could be identified and preserved before attempting anything. On the phone, she described the new route carefully and arranged to return with her father. Broad chords and occasional high notes open like wind passing the hillside. The map could not keep every tree standing, but it gave two distant people a route they could continue updating together.
