SOUNDSCAPE 21 / WINTER AMBIENT
Lanterns after snowfall
A small red thing, waiting to be found.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
Before the snowplow reaches the corner, you know the early bus is out of reach. Snow softens the sound beneath your shoes and seems to pull the roofs of the village a little lower. You lean the luggage against a wooden post in the shelter and settle in for the next service. Across the road, a baker switches on the lights and begins moving packed snow away from the door.
A few widely spaced notes arrive before a chord that stays for a long time. Walking beside the fence, you notice a red mitten in the snow. It is barely as long as your palm, with a crooked letter sewn into the cuff. You place it on the dry bench in the shelter, then borrow paper from the bakery to write where you found it.
The baker reads the note and waves toward a house across the street. Minutes later, a child arrives with an adult, wearing the matching mitten. Before looking at you, the child lays the pair together and checks that the letters face the same way. Only when they look up to say thank you do you realize you are still holding the borrowed pencil.
The next bus finally turns the corner. You return the pencil and accept a small paper bag containing a warm roll. Condensation soon hides the shelter from the bus window, but its small red detail stays in your memory. The missed departure is no longer simply a mistake to correct. It gave this unfamiliar village a small event that you helped bring to an ending.
