SOUNDSCAPE 22 / HIGHLAND CHILL
The room above the ridge
A folded map can hold more than directions.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SOUND
The mountain fog arrives before the forecast promised it. By the time you enter the guesthouse, rain has softened the paper map and nearly opened one of its folds. An older person at reception brings two boards so it can dry flat near the stove. The ridge has disappeared outside. Only the tray of wet boots by the door still clearly reflects the room’s light.
The bass feels like luggage placed steadily on the floor, while the melody turns slowly above it. Once the paper dries a little, you look for tomorrow’s route and discover that its most important section crosses the damaged fold. Instead of finding a replacement map, your host searches a drawer and returns with an old photograph whose colors have begun to fade.
The photograph shows a little bridge with three trees beside it. In the blank margin, your host draws the same outline and says the bridge is easier to recognize than the trail signs. You add a stone wall at the junction and a narrow stream. The route you had intended merely to follow becomes a record of details remembered by two people together.
Before bed, the map is dry and the tear is joined with transparent tape. You leave the photograph beneath a cup, promising to return it after the walk. Fog still waits outside the glass. The journey is no more certain than before, but you know you will look carefully for the three trees when you reach that bridge. Sometimes a remembered detail is where a journey really begins.
